The short answer

Codex vs Claude Code: which is better?

Neither wins outright: both cost $20 a month for full access and run in the terminal, editor, desktop and cloud. Pick Codex for a free or $8 start, an open-source CLI and Pro plans with no five-hour limit. Pick Claude Code for Opus 5.5 by default, a yearly discount and cloud-provider billing.

What is the difference between Codex and Claude Code?

Codex is OpenAI’s coding agent and runs on OpenAI’s GPT models. Claude Code is Anthropic’s coding agent and runs on Anthropic’s Claude models. Both read your codebase, edit files, run commands and open pull requests, and both come with a chat subscription you may already pay for: ChatGPT for Codex, Claude for Claude Code.

The real differences are in the plans around them. Codex has a free and an $8 entry point and a $500 top tier. Claude Code starts at $20, offers a yearly price on Pro and can bill through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud or Microsoft Foundry. Each draws on a usage allowance shared with its chat app, so heavy chatting leaves less room for coding.

How much do Codex and Claude Code cost?

Codex and Claude Code both cost $20 a month for full access, as of October 2026. Above that, the ladders differ: Claude Code tops out at $200 a month for individuals, while Codex goes to $500. Claude Pro is the only individual plan of the two with a yearly price.

OpenAI says ChatGPT Go and Plus are billed monthly, and lists no yearly price for Pro. Anthropic says Max is billed monthly only. Both let you keep working past your limit: ChatGPT Plus and Pro users can buy extra credits, and paid Claude plans can turn on usage credits billed at standard API rates.

Max 5x and Max 20x also include $100 and $200 a month in API credits for building on the Claude Platform, according to Anthropic’s pricing page. That matters if you also call Claude from your own app.

What are the usage limits on Codex and Claude Code?

Neither company publishes a fixed message count. Both meter usage over a five-hour window, add weekly limits, and say the real number depends on the model, the size of your codebase and how long the task runs.

  • Codex on Plus and Standard Business: OpenAI estimates 15–160 local messages per five hours on GPT-6.1 Sol, 5–45 on GPT-6 Astra and 350–3,000 on GPT-6 Luna. Cloud tasks may use more of the allowance than local messages, and Fast mode uses included usage at 2.5 times the Standard rate.
  • Codex on Pro: OpenAI says Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit. Weekly limits are not ruled out.
  • Claude Code on Pro: at least five times the usage of the free Claude plan per five-hour session, plus weekly limits.
  • Claude Code on Max: five or twenty times Pro’s usage per five-hour session. Fable, Anthropic’s most capable model, can use up to 50% of Max’s weekly limits; on Pro it is listed as available through usage credits.
  • Both: the allowance is shared with the chat app. Long ChatGPT Work sessions draw on Codex usage, and Claude chats draw on Claude Code usage.

In practice, both $20 plans suit a few focused coding sessions a week. If you run an agent for hours each day, budget for a $100 or $200 plan on either side, or an API key billed by the token.

Is Codex better than Claude Code?

Codex is not better than Claude Code across the board, and the reverse is also true. Public benchmarks and developer reviews disagree from month to month as each company ships new models, so treat any single score as a snapshot. The plan details below don’t change weekly, and they decide more than most people expect.

  • Pick Codex if you want to start for $0 or $8, already pay for ChatGPT Plus, want an open-source CLI you can read and fork, or need a $500 tier with Ultrafast mode and no five-hour limit.
  • Pick Claude Code if you want Opus 5.5 by default, a yearly price on Pro, Max plans that include $100 or $200 a month in API credits, or billing through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud or Microsoft Foundry.
  • Pick either if you mainly work in VS Code or Cursor: both have an extension that runs inside them.
  • Use both if you can afford $40 a month: one option is to keep one agent for planning and review and the other for implementation, and both read the same AGENTS.md file.

Codex CLI vs Claude Code: how do the terminal tools compare?

The Codex CLI and Claude Code’s CLI do the same job in the terminal: you start them in a project folder, describe a task, and approve or reject the changes. The differences are in how you install them, which platforms they support and what powers them.

Both connect to outside tools through MCP, the open standard for giving an agent access to your tickets, docs or databases. On native Windows, Anthropic notes that Claude Code’s sandboxing needs WSL 2.

How to test Codex and Claude Code on your own code

The fairest test is one week on your own repository, on the $20 plan of each. Here is a simple way to run it.

  1. 1

    Write one shared instructions file

Put your coding standards, test command and folder layout in AGENTS.md. Codex reads it, and Claude Code can read it in place of a CLAUDE.md.

  2. 2

    Pick three real tasks

One small bug, one feature that touches several files, and one refactor. Use the same three for both agents, each on its own branch.

  3. 3

Run each task with the default model

GPT-6.1 Sol in Codex and Opus 5.5 in Claude Code. Note how many corrections each needed and whether the tests passed.

  4. 4

Check your usage after each task

Run /status in the Codex CLI and open Settings > Usage in Claude. This shows how far $20 really goes on your codebase.

  5. 5

    Decide on the evidence

Keep the one that needed fewer corrections, or keep both and split planning and implementation between them.

What do Codex and Claude Code leave for you to do?

Both agents write and change code. Neither hosts your app, takes payments, answers your customers or tells you which users are about to cancel. If you are building a product to sell, those parts are still yours to choose, connect and pay for, which is where most side projects stall.

That is the gap Starty fills. You can talk to Starty from Claude Code or Codex through MCP, and it builds the product with sign-in, payments, emails, a customer support agent and analytics already in place.
